Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
