Vladimir Kramnik Denies Misconduct in Passing of American Grandmaster Naroditsky

The former world champion has spoken out after the tragic passing of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, calling the 29-year-old's loss as a heartbreaking event while condemning critics for mounting what he termed an "unprecedentedly cynical and unlawful campaign of harassment" against him and his family.

Former Champion's Response

The fifty-year-old former world champion, who has faced broad criticism for alleging Naroditsky of online cheating lacking proof, expressed condolences but denied any personal attacks.

"Despite the tensions, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, observing through footage Daniel's apparent health concerns a day before his death, publicly called for him to get assistance," Kramnik stated. "The ensuing efforts, immediately following his passing, to directly link this tragic event to my name … cross all boundaries of fundamental human decency."

Kramnik said his earlier calls for a review of Naroditsky's digital games had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and claimed he would submit documentation to "any relevant authority". He mentioned his lawyers were drafting civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.

Police Findings

The demise of the grandmaster may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being investigated as a possible suicide, according to a law enforcement document released Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department says Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and classifies the case as a "Investigation into sudden death."

"Last Sunday, October 19 at approximately 07:11pm, officers answered an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the report says. "When they reached the scene, an unresponsive subject was located and later declared dead by a medic."

Community Reaction

Anger over Kramnik's conduct has dominated the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura called his behavior "appalling", while reigning champion Magnus Carlsen labeled it "terrible". Indian grandmaster Sarin, who played Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "causing a death", saying his vigilante campaign against alleged rule-breakers was fruitless and "completely unacceptable".

Naroditsky's Legacy

A graduate of Stanford and ex-youth titleholder, Naroditsky amassed over 800,000 followers on streaming platforms. Referred to as Danya, he was praised for his wit, insight and modesty, becoming a leading voice in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also among the globe's top competitors under rapid formats, placing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.

Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the accusations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his psychological well-being. "Since the Kramnik controversy, I feel like if I start doing well, people suspect foul play," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.

Official Responses

The International Chess Federation (Fide) said this week it was "looking into" Kramnik's actions. "Kramnik's methodology simply is unacceptable," Fide chief executive Sutovsky stated. The organization intends to commemorate Naroditsky with a tribute prize.

Federation president Arkady Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's public statements about Naroditsky, prior to and following his passing, would be submitted to the federation's disciplinary body "for independent consideration".

"Human life and dignity are core principles shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "Our global chess family has always valued the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a duty to maintain the standards of equity and consideration."

Family's Hope

Naroditsky's relatives have expressed they hope he is recalled not because of the confrontation he faced but for "the happiness and motivation he provided others every day". Carlsen described him "a resource to the chess community", while Nakamura described him as "among the finest".
