British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
