2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Key Hires

The news follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete message from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following some time of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben soon. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

David

Background of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or supported systems, but players can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
